Peanuts to This
Proudly reading my words, I glanced aroundthe room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces andtears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher.
Having no choice, I slowly raised the reportI had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. "What could be causing everyone to act this way?"
Quickly, I flashed back to the day MissLancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my newschool. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a mannamed George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacherin my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched thename of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing thesame name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses forpeanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at thescreen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for agolden piece of advice: flip (掷) a coin. Heads--the commander, and tails--the peanuts guy. Ah!Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter,George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, standing before this unfriendlymass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began hisreport, it all became clear, "My report is on George Washington, the manwho started the American Revolution." The whole world became quiet! Howcould I know that she meant that George
Washington?
Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbrokenbut fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but sheinsisted: no re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was notjustified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I threwmyself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster´s office withmy grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled andflashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as theheadmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!

I have been consistently opposed tofeeding a baby regularly. As a doctor, mother and scientist in childdevelopment, I believe there is nothing to recommend it, from the baby´s pointof view.
Mothers, doctors and nurses alike have noidea of where a baby’s blood sugar level lies. All we know is that a low levelis harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks forattention by crying and searching for food with its mouth.
It is not just unkind but also dangerous tosay a four-hourly feeding schedule will make a baby satisfied. The first of theexperts to advocate a strict clock-watching schedule was Dr Frederic Truby Kingwho was against feeding in the night. I´ve never heard anything so ridiculous.Baby feeding shouldn´t follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important isfeeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in thefirst few weeks.
Well, at last we have copper-bottomedresearch that supports demand feeding and points out the weaknesses of strictlytimed feeding. The research finds out that babies who are fed on demand dobetter at school at age 5,7,11 and 14, than babies fed according to the clock.By the age of 8, their IQ (智商) scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a rigidtimetable. This research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample(样本) of 10,419 children born in the early 1990s, takingaccount of parental education, family income, a child´s sex and age, the mother´shealth and feeding style. These results don´t surprise me. Feeding according toschedule runs the risk of harming the rapidly growing brain by taking noaccount of sinking blood sugar levels.
I hope this research will put an end toadvocating strictly timed baby feeding practices.
{TS} What does the author think aboutDr King?
A、He is strict.

A、The baby will sleep well.
B、The baby will have its brain harmed.
C、The baby will have a low blood sugarlevel.
D、The baby will grow to be wiser by the ageof 8.

A new retail phenomenon from Japan whichallows customers to walk away with free products is to launch in Britain. Fromtomorrow, visitors to Sample Trend´s central London store can try anything onits shelves, and all of the products can be taken home without charge.
For a nominal annual membership fee of £ 60, users are free toenter the shop once a month and help themselves to no less than £ 250 worth of goods every year. The only "catch" is that shoppersare asked to complete a simple questionnaire about each product they try. Knownas "try-vertising", the concept allows manufacturers to test productsand receive consumer feedback (反馈) before launchingonto the open market. Sample Trend and wait for consumers to trythem out.
Customers complete a short 10-pointquestionnaire about the product, and the feedback they provide is used to makeany finishing touches before the product is brought officially to market. 1、D2、B3、B4、A5、D6、A7、C8、C9、A10、D11、B12、D13、A14、A15、C16、B17、C18、D19、C20、A21、D22、C23、B24、A25、D26、B27、A28、C29、D30、A31、A32、B33、D34、B35、C36、A37、B38、C39、B40、A41、D42、B43、C44、B45、D46、C47、D48、C49、A50、C
1
其他三项,since“因为;既然;自从”,if“如果”,when“当……
luckily“幸运地”,hopefully“充满希望地”,gladly“高兴地”.normally“正常地”。
Should have done“本应该做却没有做”,could have done“本可以做却没有做”,must have done“过去一定做了”,might have done“过去可能做了”。
The fact that she was foreign是主语,made是谓语,这里用it作形式宾语,真正的宾语是后面的不定式to get a job in that country。make it difficultfor sb.to do sth.
give up“放弃,投降”,give away“赠送,分发,泄露”,giveout“发出,分发,用完”,give in“呈交;交上(试卷等)”。故选D。
13
promise“允诺,使很有可能,有指望或希望”,agree“同意,赞成”,pretend“假装”,refuse“拒绝”。
Be worth doing sth.
quietly“安静地”,hurriedly“匆忙地”,happily“快乐地”,loudly“大声地”。
